The Winter King is an upcoming high fantasy series based on the books by Bernard Cornwell that’s making its way to the small screens of MGM+ and Epix viewers. It is based upon a trilogy of books that chronicle the adventures of King Arthur of the Ancient Britons.

In this post, you’ll learn everything that’s important concerning this production ahead of its premiere. We’ll share with you a few details about the plot, cast, release dates, and coordinates as to where to watch the program.

The Winter King Preview

The Winter King is an on-screen adaptation of a trilogy of books penned by Bernard Cromwell. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s also the author of “The Last Kingdom”.

This trilogy of books, titled “The Warlord Chronicles”, initially published back in 1995 by Penguin Group, puts King Arthur at the center stage along with all the characters we’re familiar with that lore, that is Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere, and others as they navigate the ups and downs of Britain’s most violent times.

The Winter King is going to start its plotlines from the first book of the series, meaning that if the show takes off and becomes renewed, there’ll be plenty of material and plotlines to take on.

What Is The Winter King Book One About?

Since the series will pick up things starting from the first book, here’s a brief summary of what that book is about. You see, the story takes place in Britain, and chaos reigns throughout that kingdom. The Saxons were beaten by its soldiers, commanded by the Edling (crown prince), Mordred, and Arthur (the king’s bastard), but at a terrible cost: After Prince Mordred was killed, the realm was left without a successor. High King Uther Pendragon banishes Arthur to Armorica and accuses him of killing his son.

The only thing that can save Dumnonia is for Norwenna, Mordred’s wife, to give birth to a son. There are worries for both the mother and the unborn child as Norwenna goes into labor. Pagan Uther finally loses patience with Norwenna’s Christian midwives and asks Morgan, the priestess of Merlin, to give birth.

A male child is born, but he has a crippled leg, which is viewed as a very negative sign because the paganism magic appears to have worked. The High King disregards the omen and announces that the son will be given the name Mordred in honor of his father.
