Austin Theory is steadily building his reputation as one of WWE’s up-and-coming talents, showcasing his skills on television each week. After winning the United States Championship, Theory had high hopes to become a major star. However, he dropped the title to Rey Mysterio on Smackdown last week and now it appears he believes the loss was a screwjob.
Santos Escobar was scheduled to challenge Austin Theory for the United States Title last week on Friday Night Smackdown. However, plans changed as he suffered an injury ahead of the match and ended up being replaced by Rey Mysterio.
The Master of the 619 wasted no time in establishing dominance and defeated Theory to become the new United States Champion, as the LWO and the fans in attendance celebrated.
While speaking with WWE’s After The Bell podcast, Austin Theory talked about his loss and stated that Rey Mysterio stepped up because of a match that the two had back in April, where Theory defeated Mysterio the night after WrestleMania 39. Theory then stated that his loss was simply a screwjob.
“I kinda see why he stepped up, I hurt his feelings. He’s a little jealous cause I beat him right after WrestleMania. That victory on Rey, I just beat John Cena, I’m a little sore but I’ll beat another legend. That’s where my mindset was.
Maybe I was a little too relaxed on SmackDown when [the title change] happened. I still think that was a screw job, but it is what it is. If anyone was going to beat me, It would have to be somebody like that because nobody can really beat Austin Theory.”
Theory held the US Championship for 258 days and will remain in the record books as one of the longest-reigning United States Champions of all time. We’ll have to see whether he will invoke his rematch clause on Rey Mysterio soon.
