Carmelo Hayes worked hard to make himself one of the highlights of NXT. His impeccable in-ring skills and athleticism helped him win over fans as well. He has developed a lot in NXT and is the current NXT Champion. Now it appears he broke his silence after making history at NXT Heatwave.
Carmelo Hayes eventually defeated Bron Breakker earlier this year to become the NXT Champion. He would then go on to defend his title successfully and has continued to become a major draw for the brand.
As seen on this week’s episode of NXT Heatwave, Carmelo Hayes defended his NXT Championship against Wes Lee. They made history by becoming the first pair of African American men to wrestle in a single match for the NXT Championship. In the end, Carmelo Hayes won the match.
While speaking in an interview following his impressive win, Carmelo Hayes talked about the pride he felt to wrestle a fellow Black wrestler for the top title in NXT.
“Freakin’ Wes Lee, man! He was one of the greatest North American Champions for a reason … that kid has got so much fight in him,” Hayes said. “Also, I’m not sure if you know this, Kelly [Kincaid], but he and I made history … this was the first-ever main event with two Black men for the ‘NXT’ Championship — ever.
“It was a special moment for me, but I didn’t take my eyes off the prize,” Hayes continued. “I left a lot of questions on the table as to how I was retaining my title. But tonight, I gave everybody the answer they were looking for — and that is, I am HIM.”
WWE is also very high on Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams. Regardless, we will have to wait and see what WWE NXT has planned for Carmelo Hayes, as his star continues to shine bright.
