The WWE Universe was left speculating about Kevin Owens’ future with the company back in 2021 as his contract approached its expiration date. However, in a surprising turn of events, Owens decided to re-sign with WWE for a reported sum of $2-3 million before the year’s end.
Since recommitting to WWE, Kevin Owens has become an even more prominent figure on the roster. He has headlined two WrestleManias and is currently holding the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships alongside his long-time best friend, Sami Zayn.
In a candid conversation with Ariel Helwani of TNT Sports, Kevin Owens opened up about the reasons behind his decision to stay with WWE. He revealed that the primary factor was Vince McMahon’s desire for him to remain with the company, combined with his own feeling that he had more to accomplish within WWE.
“I had no idea how badly they [WWE] wanted me to stay here, I had no clue what was possible elsewhere, I had no clue. And honestly… none of the talks went very far.”
“Because once it was time to talk to Vince, he made it clear he wanted me to stay. And I felt like I wasn’t done here. Not even career-wise, but there’s also a whole side to this place that people don’t see, that people don’t know.”
While contract negotiations are often complex and can involve various factors, it seems that Vince McMahon’s personal interest in retaining Kevin Owens played a significant role in the wrestler’s decision-making process. The trust and support from WWE’s Chairman of the Board weighed heavily on Owens’ choice to continue his journey with the company.
However, as fate would have it, Kevin Owens is currently dealing with a rib injury that has sidelined him, forcing him to miss the highly anticipated WWE SummerSlam 2023 event scheduled for this Saturday. While he may not be able to participate in the action at the moment, there is no doubt that Owens will return with the same determination and passion that has made him a beloved figure in the wrestling world.
