Prominent wrestling figure Kazuchika Okada faced a significant setback as his rival and the leader of Los Ingobernables de Japón, Tetsuya Naito, emerged victorious in the G1 Climax 33 finals held in Tokyo.

This climactic battle brought their head-to-head singles competition to a standstill at seven victories each. Naito’s latest win marked his third G1 Climax victory, following his triumphs in 2013 and 2017. This remarkable achievement places Naito among an elite group of individuals who have clinched the G1 Climax championship three times.

Naito’s path to the finals was no easy feat, involving a demanding match against arguably one of the world’s best wrestlers, Will Ospreay, in the semi-finals. Their intense 30+ minute encounter left Naito battered, but he ultimately emerged victorious. In the finals, Naito faced off against the renowned Rainmaker Okada in a gripping contest that lasted over 35 minutes. It took three of Naito’s powerful Destino finishers to secure the pinfall against the four-time G1 Climax winner.

Naito’s hard-fought triumph earned him an opportunity to contend for the IWGP World Heavyweight title at the highly anticipated Wrestle Kingdom event. At present, Naito is poised to go head-to-head with his former Los Ingobernables de Japón teammate, SANADA, for the championship in the illustrious Tokyo Dome.

As this rivalry unfolds in the upcoming months leading to the Wrestle Kingdom, it will undoubtedly captivate the wrestling world, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the dynamic evolution of this feud.

Wrestling sensation Will Ospreay reveals new IWGP title

In a bold and surprising move, wrestling sensation Will Ospreay recently unveiled a brand-new championship following his defeat at the hands of Tetsuya Naito.

Ospreay made the decision to replace his previous IWGP United States championship with the freshly introduced IWGP United Kingdom Championship. After his setback in the semi-finals of the G1 Climax against Naito, Ospreay not only commended Naito’s victory but also went on to explain the rationale behind his choice to exchange the US Championship.

Voicing his perspective, Ospreay stated, “It’s not the belt that defines a person, but rather the person that defines the belt. I’ve grown tired of carrying something that I don’t have a personal connection to. I don’t wish to carry the banner of the United States. I’ve showcased my skills and excellence in countries around the globe — America, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan. And I believe that the best in the world hails from the United Kingdom.”

Ospreay’s conviction was evident as he continued, addressing the IWGP committee, “I present this belt back to you. I no longer desire it. I seek a championship that resonates with my identity and aspirations. While my initial intention was to unveil this championship upon defeating Naito, circumstances have altered my plans. I proudly assert that I am the best in the world, and I’m ready to embrace this championship that reflects my vision.”

Ospreay’s words on the championship

Furthermore, Ospreay emphasized the significance of the newly introduced championship, declaring, “This title is an embodiment of my excellence. It symbolizes my status as the best in the world. I have triumphed over renowned opponents like Kenny Omega and Okada. To anyone out there who believes they surpass me, I extend an invitation — challenge me for this championship, defeat me, and you’ll rightfully claim the title of being the best in the world.”

Despite acknowledging Naito’s victory, Ospreay remained resolute about his future, declaring, “Congratulations to Naito, but the sun rises anew each day. Tomorrow is a fresh beginning, and I’m steadfast in my determination to carry this championship forward with me.”

This audacious move by Will Ospreay adds an intriguing layer of excitement to the wrestling landscape, as he redefines his legacy and embarks on a journey with the newly established IWGP United Kingdom Championship.
