Serge Gainsbourg And Jane Birkin Divorce: Everything To Know 

Talking about Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s divorce, one must note how things started. Well, it was in 1968 when the two met each other on the set of Slogan. It was not just romantic but they became long-time working partners too. At the time, Jane Birkin was already suffering the heartbreak which accompanied the disappearance of John Barry (then-husband). 

During the first meeting, Jane Birkin reportedly found Serge Gainsbourg very arrogant and ugly. The two had a huge age difference, as Jane was just 22, and Serge was 40, back at the time. While shooting for Slogan, Jane couldn’t speak a single French word which he didn’t like. 

As we all know, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin dated for 12 years, fans initially couldn’t believe their break-up rumors. Well, it was Jane who took the initiative to end their romance because of his alcohol addiction. Several rumors sparked stating their marriage but it was not true. Serge’s alcoholism led to violence. The actress got tired of his drinking habits and aggression.

Not to forget to mention, Serge Gainsbourg was very much committed to alcohol. In other words, the addiction was absolute, which he was unable to get rid of, at the time. Being a partner, Jane tried to get him out of that but failed. You will be surprised to know that the music artist couldn’t even drive because he felt that drinking would interfere.

At the age of 45, more precisely in 1973, Serge Gainsbourg suffered a heart attack. It was quite at a young age. While he was admitted to the hospital, several pill bottles stuffed with cigarette butts were found hidden in the room. 

Even though Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s divorce happened, their love for each other stayed strong until the end. It was in 1991 when the music artist passed away after a second heart attack. Jane didn’t find it easy to accept that Serge was no more. She kept his body, not letting go.

When Serge was buried, she placed “Munckey”, her favorite toy in his coffin. It was understandable how painful for Jane the situation was. We believe, both, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin are together in heaven.
