No, there are no plans for Sherlock Season 5 after Series 4 aired in 2017. There’s a slight chance for a Sherlock movie to happen instead.
Since Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have been occupied with other projects over the years, the possibility of a Sherlock Season 5 wasn’t high. But in an interview with Screen Rant in July 2023, Sherlock creator Mark Gatiss stated that he’d love to do a movie instead of a new season. When asked about the next season, he said:
“We were genuinely interested in making them for TV because we love TV. We would love to make a Sherlock movie. It’s the natural thing to do.”
So, in practicality, the highly awaited fifth season of the BBC series will be converted into a movie if it materializes. That would be easier as instead of making three expensive 90-minute episodes, we’d get a special similar to The Abominable Bride.
But it isn’t confirmed yet, and the chances of it happening are slim. The leading actors are occupied with Marvel and other projects, and there isn’t much story left to tell. So, fans of the series shouldn’t keep their hopes high for now.
