Edge wrestled on SmackDown this week, and that match against Sheamus could be his final outing for the company. Now, fans might see a big change for the WWE Hall of Famer’s career.
Ringside News exclusively reported that there is an internal belief within WWE that Edge is going to AEW. After all, he has not inked a new deal with WWE, and his contract is running up.
Sean Sapp noted behind Fightful’s paywall that fans won’t be seeing “Edge” in All Elite Wrestling. That being said, Adam Copeland is much more likely, because that “Edge” name is trademarked by WWE.
The report went on to note that there are a few people in AEW who seem to think that Edge is coming to their company. After all, he has some connections with the roster already.
There are many in AEW that think that Copeland coming in could be a real possibility. Those close to him claimed earlier this year that the idea of him working in AEW isn’t as “out there” as you’d think. Obviously, Edge is close with Christian, but also Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, who helped him prepare for his in-ring return.
Beyond many in AEW thinking it could be a real possibility, it was being discussed by a lot of people in AEW even before Edge claimed the match with Sheamus would be his last on his contract.
The report went on to note that, “WWE has been much more quiet about contract extensions, re-signings, and even releases or contract expirations.” That being said, this is a real situation with some reality behind it.
Tony Khan had expressed interest in bringing Edge back to wrestling even before it became evident that an in-ring return was possible in 2019. Edge initiated contact with Vince McMahon, outlining these discussions, and McMahon indicated that if a return were to happen, it should take place in WWE. Consequently, WWE arranged meetings with doctors and conducted tests to assess his fitness for a comeback, which ultimately led to his return.
Edge mentioned during an interview with ET that his match against Sheamus marked the final bout under his current WWE contract. However, he clarified that the contract technically extends through September. It’s important to note that this hasn’t been officially confirmed, and even if the match is his last, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the contract is set to expire or not. To illustrate further, similar to Goldberg, whose deal extended beyond his last contracted match, Edge’s contract situation may be more complex. The outlet stated that sources suggested that Edge’s contract was extended due to injury, individuals close to Edge haven’t verified this claim.
